The Collaborative Communications Summit announces that Misys Open Source Solutions and other healthcare leaders will present a panel on how open source technology is gaining traction as an effective and viable health IT solution for care providers at the upcoming Spring CCS Health IT Summit taking place this June 16th -17th, 2009 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
As information technology in the health care industry evolves, the scope of information sharing is expanding beyond the walls of individual institutions. Achieving this level of integration will require that software models overcome a host of technical obstacles, and that they are accessible, affordable, and widely supported.
The development and distribution of open source software, a well-established software development model, is one potential solution to the looming challenges of integration. Characterized by collaboration among individuals and organizations with common interests, shared intellectual property, and a commitment to standards open source has been used in over 1,400 VA facilities and numerous healthcare systems throughout the country.

The panel entitled, “Coming to Life: Open Source as a Viable and Cost Effective Health IT Solution,” will explore open source basics, including the advantages open source presents, and how it works. The session also offers industry perspectives, explores the potential impact on EMR systems and regional health information networks, and compares open source to traditional, proprietary software.
Panelists include Alesha Adamson, Director of Misys Open Source Solutions – Healthcare, Craig Miller, Executive Director, Enterprise Solutions of Vangent Corporation and Chief Architect for the Federal Health Architecture CONNECT Initiative and Steve O’Neil, VP Information Services for Hartford Hospital, Connecticut.
