Only Nine EMR Apps for iPad in the iTunes Store?

App Store
Image via Wikipedia

I did a quick search at the iTunes App Store today for EMR apps and was surprised to find only nine apps listed for the iPad.   Actually two of the nine were listed twice as both free and enhanced versions so you could say there are only seven.

I then did the same search for the iPhone and found 51 apps listed.   Apparently most of those vendors haven’t seen enough demand to warrant re-writing their iPhone apps to benefit iPad users.  Sure, you can use the iPhone apps on the iPad but seriously, there’s a lot more real estate on the iPad screen and it could be put to good use if the apps were re-written.

The current list of  iPad EMR apps is:

  1. STAT ICD-9 LITE (Free) and STAT ICD-9 Coder ($29.95)
  2. Mediforms EMR Lite (Free
  3. Dr. Chrono EMR (Free)
  4. Allscripts Remote (Free)
  5. Capzule PHR ($9.99)
  6. STAT E&M Lite (Free) and STAT E&M Coder ($49.99)
  7. Patient Keeper (Free)

I think everyone's waiting to see how well the iPad does post fad/hype stage: will it go the route of earlier tablets, or became as transcendent as the original iPod? I'd say it has to pass the tv sitcom litmus test: you'll know the iPad is successful not when it's a punchline (meaning it's hip and in the news), but so mundane as to be used by the characters without any mention at all (like driving, reading the paper, or watching TV).

Does anyone know of an IPAD EMR solution that meets the CMS' Interim Final Ruling definition of meaningful use? I know that the official definition of meaningful use is not set but some vendors have had their EMR solution IFR certified by CCHIT.
