athenahealth Responds to “Meaningful Use” Requirements for EHRs: Extends Deadline for Participation in Federal Stimulus Bonus Payment Guarantee Program for Physicians Nationwide

athenahealth, Inc. , a leading provider of web-based practice management, electronic health record (EHR), and patient communication services to medical groups, today announced that on the back of the Government’s July 13th release of final rules for “Meaningful Use” of electronic health records, it is extending the deadline for participation in its successful Federal Stimulus Bonus Payment Guarantee Program. Originally launched in September 2009, this program guaranteed that physicians would qualify to receive a HITECH Act bonus payment under the 2011 program year if they signed up for and implemented athenaClinicals by January of 2011. With this deadline extension, physicians will now have until June 30, 2011 to participate in the program. Visit to learn more about athenahealth’s EHR and the federal bonus guarantee program.

“The extension of our Guarantee Program signals our absolute confidence in helping our physicians to successfully participate in Meaningful Use and collect stimulus dollars,” said Jonathan Bush, athenahealth’s Chairman and CEO. “Because of the inherent flexibility in our web-based EHR, we are uniquely positioned to help physicians meet the most ambitious eligibility requirements. Our technology differentiation is based on shared, iterative learning that results in the network getting smarter every day.

Bush continued, “Frankly, athenahealth clients would have been equally well positioned, and our company as confident, had the Government held criteria to a higher bar. We strongly believe that as new rules and requirements evolve, athenahealth offers a platform that future-proofs our customers for whatever changes are to come.”

Bush continued, “The ability of our network to adapt quickly to change and to actively guide practice workflows through such change is miles ahead of traditional software solutions whose functionality is sort of dumped on physicians to figure out how to use properly. Since we do all the back-end work for our doctors, they can spend their time caring for patients rather than jumping through eligibility and requirement hoops.”

athenahealth’s Clinical Intelligence Team (CIT) will continue to support their Guarantee Program, working to deliver the maximum allowable stimulus benefit to eligible physicians by ensuring that both athenaCollector(R) and athenaClinicals services are continuously updated to stay compliant with current and future HITECH Act reporting requirements.

As part of the Company’s ongoing advocacy efforts on behalf of physicians, it is offering an in-depth webinar series beginning July 21st entitled, “Meaningful Use is Out — Are You Ready?” This educational series will help decode and translate meaningful use for physicians, supporting their efforts to understand its implications for the adoption and implementation of EHR solutions. The HITECH Act is part of the larger stimulus package known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Act includes up to $44,000 total in Medicare payment incentives per eligible provider who demonstrates “meaningful use” of an EHR starting in 2011.
