A Pre-Release Look at the new VitalHealth EHR

While at HIMSS11 I had the opportunity to spend some time looking at the new EHR system being built by VitalHealth.  This  new system, scheduled for release later this year, is designed to benefit the small physician practice and from what I saw it will.

VitalHealth EHR on an iPad

My initial reaction to the product was that it was elegantly designed, intuitive and extremely easy to use.  It looked as though it was designed to run on an iPad, even though the demonstration I saw was done on a PC.

The product is SaaS (software as a service) based and according to VitalHealth was designed to be full featured but easy to use. Starting with few preconceived ideas and using the results of a Mayo Clinic study of small practice workflow, the design team followed and interviewed small practice physicians before beginning the product design phase.  They combined the results of that research with Meaningful Use requirements to build a product that they refer to as something “designed by physicians, for physicians.”

In addition to the EHR functionality the product will also offer modules for practice management, front desk and CPOE (computerized physician order entry).

The practice management feature will include a suite of performance indicators and reports that can help a practice manage patient population and generate the necessary performance reports to be submitted to prove meaningful use.

The front desk module provides options for appointment scheduling, patient check-in and check-out, insurance eligibility checking, electronic claims submission as well as the ability to export to an existing billing system.

CPOE functionality includes electronic ordering of tests or test sets, electronic resulting of lab tests, SureScripts certified e-Prescriptions and more.

Overall this appears to be a very nice EHR option for smaller practices that may not have IT staff.  If you find yourself still in the market for a product in the second half of this year the intuitive and easy to use VitalHealth EHR is something you may want to consider.
