According to a new research published by healthcare electronic attachment vendor MEA|NEA, keeping data safe continues to be an overwhelming problem. The following graphic outlines digital data security and how it affects consumers, as well as business entities, especially healthcare.
The data here makes clear that security continues to be a major problem and supports the ever-present headlines about breaches and the effects hackers are having on all of us. For example, according to the data represented in the following graphic, of the 90 percent of US residents having access to the Internet – about 319 million people – almost 75 percent of those people have been or soon will be the victim of some sort of cyber attack, which represents about 288 million of us.
In addition, in a recent study by Verizon Business, of 90 data breaches reviewed, 285 million data records were exposed, meaning a total nine exposures per second. Here’s where it starts to get more serious: Organized crime was responsible for 90 percent of all compromised data records that were used in a crime.
Also of note, 74 percent of all data breaches were initiated by external attacks, and 64 percent of breaches are enabled by a combination of events, including hacking, malware, SQL injection and other forms, and all of these forms may be used in a single data breach.
